Moving to Texas from Ucon halfway through the 4th grade was nerve-racking. On the way there I didn’t think much about what would happen. When I saw that my family was going to live in an apartment I felt uncertain. Moving into a new place also meant that I had to go to a new school. My mind raced. So many terrible things could happen in a new school. The day came. I walked into the classroom and felt like I was in a spotlight. I would have to go to a new school called Pickett Elementary. In Ucon, I did A.R. tests. They were very unpleasant. There were always A.R. parties at the end of the year and I always wanted to go to them. So I had to quickly read as many books as possible and understand the book so I could get a good score on the A.R. test. I remember being behind, having to come in the morning before school started, and having to read and take the A.R. tests. When I moved to Texas there were no A.R. tests. When I asked the other students if there were A.R. tests. They looked at me as if I were crazy. They had no idea what A.R. tests even were! I was so happy! I didn’t do much reading in 4th grade, but in 5th grade my view on books changed completely. Without the pressure of A.R. tests, I could take the time to understand and enjoy books. When I found the “Warrior”series, I was hooked. It had such good storylines. It got me interested. I read more and more. It started taking up my time. Sometimes I would read instead of doing my homework and chores! My mom would have to come to my room and tell me to stop reading. I never thought I’d ever hear that sentence!
