Finishing up, I closed the doors one last time and said farewell to my time as the Band’s Quartermaster, farewell to many late nights and sweltering afternoons directing my crew of Band managers in our efforts to keep our band marching along as planned. On my way out, I stopped to shut down all our generators when I found that they had seemingly all been switched off and stowed away. Much to my surprise, as I thought I had told all the managers to go home, a freshman manager came up to me and asked if there was more work to be done. Recognizing who it was, my surprise only grew as I knew him to hardly be the type willing to lose sleep in order to help pack up. I told him that I had already done everything and thanked him for taking care of the generators as we walked outside to our cars. However, before we stepped out the door into the cold night, he stopped me and told me something that I won’t soon forget. He looked me in the eyes and said that I had been his role model and that four years from now he hoped he could also take on the responsibilities that I had taken on that year, responsibilities that seemingly had me working ceaselessly into the night- every
