The Puerto Rican couple that I had the privilege of interviewing, was an elderly mother and her daughter who lived in the community. Actually, it was the mother who took over the interview but I didn’t mind. According to McGoldrick, Giordano, and Preto (2005), earning the respect of others, such as elders or authority is very important to Puerto Ricans. Therefore, the mother was born in Puerto Rico and migrated to the United States with three children at the young age of twenty three. She stated it was her mother-in-law who sent her a ticket to come to New York. At the time, her husband was already in state because he was a Mission Marine. However, upon her arrival she found her husband living with another woman. To my surprise she moved in with them. Her reason was it was her husband and their children was his responsibility. More important, she wanted her children with their father. Years later she had a total of nine children. As a mother of nine she was very strict. Each child had to help with household chores. For example, the older children had to help care for younger siblings, wash dishes, and clean floors. Then, there was moment when the family faced financial difficulty and she was forced to work. She said life is supposed to be about peace and love. More important, we shouldn’t treat each other different. However, she told me the story of when she had to attend a parent teacher conference with one her son’s teachers. During, that meeting there were two teachers who were unaware of her ability to speak English. From there, they spoke in English and she just sat and listened, not letting them know she understood every word. As a result, when it was time to address her son, they tried to give her different information and she informed them that’s not what you said earlier. She said they were
