I was sitting at the Salty Dog Saloon this evening drowning my sorrows in an apple martini when a group of people walked in who dressed as if they were someone important. When they sat down at a table next to me I started to realize that they were a group of environmentalists that I had seen earlier today talking about the Keystone pipeline on the news. Who wants shots? Emma Morris a local ecologist, shouted loudly across the bar, she was the only woman in the group and you could tell that all the men were quite fond of her. Paul, Julian, John, and Karl all said I do, and Emma ordered them a round. After a few beers I started noticing the group getting a little bit rowdier and talking more loudly. I couldn’t help but over hear Paul Ehrlich …show more content…
Ehrlich, a neo Malthusian, asserted that excessive consumption and overpopulation would causes resource shortages if we continued to live unsustainably. Simon swore he won the bet and told Ehrlich he had to take a body shot of a 3 horsemen, off the bartender’s chest who had a surgical operation to get a third boob. Later on, the two then got to talking about the keystone pipeline. I could tell that Ehrlich was not happy about the situation because he blurted out loud to Simon “that having cheap energy was the equivalent of putting a machine gun in the hands of an idiot child.” He did not like the fact that the Keystone XL plans were being moved forward because he believes we should rely more on solar and wind energy instead of oil and that current technologies are invariably too pessimistic. Simon, responded with all due respect, I think that finishing the Keystone XL pipeline will be a great accomplishment. Oil is cheaper than it’s been in years, about $66 dollars a barrel and the argument about we are running out of oil just isn’t cutting it for me. Other countries such as China would be happy to build the pipeline to them if we’re not going to take …show more content…
I laughed and said, I’m not the bartender and I don’t have a third boob but I will gladly go get us a round of shots and its definitely not going to be a buttery nipple, I’m more of a Patron type of girl. We all took the shots and they asked me what I did for a living and I told them that I was a geologist who was focusing on developing the rest of the Keystone pipeline. Aldo Leopold, a land ethicists spoke up quickly about the topic. He said that if we are going to make changes to the land by adding the Keystone pipeline we need to consider our actions in light of their impact on the earth. We should also make sure that before following through with building the keystone that there is no other alternate way to build it that isn’t as harmful to the environment. Ultimately, I don’t think that we should continue to build it because I don’t want to sell the oil to other
