Heroes do not have to save someone physically, but they can they can save someone or themselves emotionally as well. Ponyboy helped Johnny get through tough times at home. Johnny was thinking about ending his own life, but Ponyboy saved him emotionally and acted as a hero should. Like the Greasers, the people who act as heroes in my life are my friends and family. My mom and dad are always risking things in their life to save me. All that the Greasers had in their life was friends and some family. My family and friends always lift me up when I am sinking and I hope that I can be seen as a hero to other people as well.
My definition of hero is some one who is courageous and does right by other people. If Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally didn't have courage, they would not have saved the children in the burning church. Heroes don't boast about their deeds. The three boys did not boast about what they had done. Dally acted embarrassed when people brought up his heroic action. He wasn't used to being called a hero because he was usually only known for doing bad things, not good things.
Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally had saved many children's lives that day of the fire. Johnny and Dally unfortunately did not have the chance to live long lives unlike the children they saved. However, that is a part of being a hero when you have to risk your life to save others, though that is not exactly how Dally died. Though Dally broke down at the end of the story, he saved Pony and had courage.
