Personal Narrative: The Raider Team

I led my team to the finish line, we were one of the first teams to finish. I had a great feeling of exhilaration. I was proud of myself, then I heard "Disqualified".
JROTC is a program which sets to give cadets the essentials to becoming better citizens. The program offers the opportunity to be the best person one can be. One must put in the effort and live up to the expectations.The raider team is no exception, it's a sport that requires mental and physical strength. A Raider is tested on his or her capability to work as part of a unit, accomplishing a common goal under stressful situations. I tried out for the Raider team to fortify my body and mind. Compared to the team, I performed at an average level. They could do more pushups, more sit-ups, more pull ups and ran faster than me, but I looked at this as motivation to improve myself.
This motivation drove me to apply myself. not only during practice but also on my own, I pushed myself to be better than I was before. My freshmen year I started as a replacement, so I observed my teammates and learned from them until I could compete in the second year. I spent my free time learning anything and everything that would improve my performance as a team member. With hard work I met my goals, I improved my pushups and sit-ups, I was not running at the pace I desired so I kept pushing. Consequently, everything changed

I wasn't disappointed in my team, I was disappointed in myself. At that point, I didn't care about winning anymore. I realized I was too caught up with the desire to win and not about the team. The whole time I was worried about how I would perform, but I didn't even consider how my team would. We could have all finished and placed higher on the scoreboard if I wasn't caught up in my own pride and desires.That was the day I learned that the team always comes before
