Personal Narrative: The Red NFS Cap

It wasn’t until I got a text at 11:13 pm Tuesday night did I realize how much this artifact meant to me. The text simply read “Hey remember that red NFS cap, can I have it?”. This was coming from a friend that I grew up swimming with who still remains on the team the cap belongs to ( I switched teams when I came to Episcopal). Looking around my room, I found the cap laying with numerous other caps in a bin. Fortunately there were two versions of this cap because a sudden rush of emotion filled me when it was found. I knew , at least one of these, I could not give away. I have not touched this cap in years. There was no need, I had moved on from this team many years ago, I was surprised I still had it. Many memorable things happened that summer. For example Morgan Freeman was injured in a car accident when his car flipped several times or that The Dark Knight featuring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger premiered, a classic. Most importantly that summer Michael Phelps won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and I joined my first year round swim team. I used to swim for the YMCA, a small undeveloped team where I shined as a swimmer at only the age of five. This leap from the YMCA Yates pool to the UNF indoor pool facility, which no longer exists, was a big leap for me. Such a big leap that upon joining the team I was not the best anymore, I was a small fish in a big pond of great swimmers. I remember crying because I did not want to join this team when I was younger. I didn’t want to lose the friends I made at the YMCA. My dad told me that the only way I would ever get better at swimming would be by joining this team. So I joined and was welcomed with a plain black cap that read North Florida Swimming. Then I saw my artifact for the first time. A much older swimmer was walking around with a bright red cap with the letters NFS in bold. This cap stood out to me. As I began to come to practice more often I noticed the cap more and more. Very few swimmers wore this cap. When I asked how/where can I get this cap to other swimmers, they responded with “I don’t
