I have learned that there is a lot more dedication to weightlifting than most people would think. For example, I cannot consistently skip days, otherwise I will lose all of the improvements I’ve made from previous workouts. I also have to keep track of my diet; if I don’t eat enough, I won’t get bigger or stronger at all, but if I eat too much, I could have too many excess calories and become overweight. Weightlifting is both physically and mentally demanding. I have observed that everyone in the community of weightlifting helps each other out for no reason other than to see someone get better. I would have never gotten into weightlifting without my uncle, who is both a personal trainer and a bodybuilder. I used to be particularly scrawny and didn’t really have an athletic physique, so my uncle came to me and put me on a workout plan to help me get bigger. This is when I grew a passion for the sport and became more independent with my weightlifting. Once improvements started to show on me, one of my friends, who was also an underweight athlete, asked me to teach him how to workout and lift weights. I told him everything I knew, and since then I learned that not only do I enjoy the sport itself, but I also enjoy teaching others how to do it so that they can improve themselves. I personally think that it is an amazing feeling when someone doesn’t understand something until I explain it to them in depth, and I get to witness that person finally begin to understand it. While I do enjoy watching myself advance, I get much satisfaction out of watching someone that came to me for help begin to improve his/her self. This selflessness is an important trait to have in life, because someone who is selfless is always reliable and will be there when he/she is depended on.
