Personal Narrative: Working At A Young Life Camp

During the summer after my graduation, I had offered a month of my time to work at a Young Life camp. It started with Gabe, my young life leader, asking me, "Would you like to join the work crew this summer? I think you’d enjoy it.” I excitedly agreed to volunteer to join work crew. Work crew is basically the group of high schooler that volunteer to work at the many young life camps. After I signed up for it, they placed my at a Camp in Burnet called Buckner. I’ve never been to this camp before or know who any of my fellow crew would be for that matter. Regardless, I was excited to be a part of the new experience. We shared stories and learned more about each other. We even had little games and challenges with each would do. The campers eventually saaw how much work went into each meal and would even help clean their tables a bit. After the first week and everything is running smoothly, I get a phone call from my mother. She asked," How's everything going?"
After I told her that everything was great, she skips straight to her main point and asked, " So, how much did you make". At first I was a little confused, then I realized that she had thought this was a paying job.
I explained to her," This job isn't paid."
She went silent for a second, then asked, "Why don't you come back then?"
Stunned by her request, I went silent for a moment. I couldn't bail out of this job, I promised to work the full time. I responded," I can't leave in the middle of Work Crew."
She then argued, "There’s no reason for you to be there." Furious with her response, I muttered, “I’ll be back when it's over.". I became angry at the fact that she wouldn't let me finish something I planned. After that conversation with my mother, I went back to working.
