Personal Responsibility
Not everyone wins the lottery, thus, we all must make some sort of effort to achieve the necessities in life, and perhaps a bit extra if possible. Taking personal responsibility is a major player when it comes to driving that effort. By breaking down the definition of personal responsibility to a sum of parts will help allow us to understand requirements in behavior and ethics which will lead to self discovery and success even in our college career. The desire driven whether it is career change or enhancement, knowledge expansion, or graduation, improvement in personal responsibility will only help maturation and culminate positive action improving on success and achieving your goals. “Responsibility means being accountable for what we think, say, and do. Personal responsibility involves working on our own character and skill development rather than blaming others for situations and circumstances. It means choosing to design a life that honors our values and purpose.” Brunkhorst, Steve (2005) What this means to me is that in order to achieve success work ethic, motivation, and other enduring efforts must be made until the goal is completed. Figure the ones who are successful in achieving their goals typically take responsibility for their actions and efforts and strive to reach the goals they set, both short term and long term. So consider the responsibility we take towards preparation in class, study habits, test taking, paper writing, and more and we can even make each a separate short term goal. Improving upon and making efforts to achieve in each will just allow us to reach the long term goal. Personal responsibility means preparing; it means studying; and means making these efforts and more to improve on ethics around education and learning. Planning is essential when taking responsibility towards success. “Before anything else, preparation is the key to success” (Alexander Graham Bell, n.d.) What I find myself missing out on is the preparation I used to take before each assignment. I would have a pen and paper ready to formulate and note take and create drafts of assignments. I would have everything planned out and outlined making it easier to create the final representation. I started to remember what helped me take personal responsibility of my education and the first step is preparation. I am coming in with the proper intrinsic motivation and drive to persist but to maintain this motivation I plan on using what I learn, through my educational experience, in my life outside of college. Practical use in my workplace, home life, and recreational activities will come in handy as motivational tools keeping me interested and see the results of my education. There is popular belief about karma. I don’t necessarily believe in that system of events, but I do find some notions behind this theory to be true and shared by other beliefs. If we project or take negative means towards any dealings in life, then what is typically reciprocated is negative. As Ven Mahasi Sayadaw, (2013) explains regarding Karma, “In other words, it is the result of our own past actions and our own present doings. We ourselves are responsible for our own happiness and misery. We create our own Heaven. We create our own Hell. We are the architects of our own fate.” This applies to attitude, communication,
