Personal Statement: Extreme Poverty Around The World

Approximately 1.3 billion people around the world, roughly 17% of the world’s population, live in extreme poverty and struggle to find food and shelter on daily basis. There are many organizations and movements dedicated to helping the poor around the globe. They implore citizens to donate money to help their efforts. For years, extreme poverty around the world has been a major issue and many people have invested or are investing their lives to try to resolve the problem. I personally think that what they’re doing is great and I’m glad that there are people in this world who would give all their time and money to help these people. I believe it is my moral obligation not to turn a blind eye to their struggles. I don’t mind giving money to the poor or volunteering my time when I have those to spare, but it is not and cannot be my responsibility to do everything I can to save the poor. …show more content…
Some are just unfortunate enough to have to be born into the life of poverty, but just because that happens doesn’t mean that it’s my duty to carry their weight. I don’t disagree that it’s my moral responsibility not to ignore them and to act like it’s not real, but for me, an average citizen, I need my money to help MY parents, to buy MY food, and to be able to pay My bills. As also a student I need as much time as I as I can get to concentrate on my school studies. Just because I wasn’t born into extreme poverty doesn’t mean I don’t need my money or my time. Sure, whenever I have money to spare, there’s no better cause to donate to than to the poor, but otherwise, it’s not my obligation to devote my life to helping them. My main responsibility is to myself and my family before anyone
