According to a survey taken by the National Federation of State High School Associations during the 2012-2013 school year the number of high school students nationwide surpassed 7.7 million for the first time in history (High School Sports..). With this information it is clear that there are many high schoolers playing sports, but with playing sports comes the pressures to succeed. Many teenagers who play sports feel the pressures to perform well on the field and in the classroom, but it is not just enough for these athletes to go to practice or to go to school. There is always the need to climb in rankings, using personal trainers and tutors to get ahead. Many say that it helps with the rising obesity rates, but some see it as an added pressure. If an athlete may not want to be a part of the large percentage of students who workout to get ahead, they may go with the trend for fear that they are falling behind. Statistics show that the job outlook for personal trainers should grow thirteen percent from 2012 to 2022 because of the encouragement for this generation to fight obesity (Bureau of Labor Statistics). The rise in the personal trainer market and the rise in student athlete's demand to become fit go hand in hand. These facts should alarm our society because our teenagers have become so focused on becoming the supreme athlete that they have forgotten their youth. American youth plays sports for more than twice the amount that Korean youth spends playing sports (Heinauer). In order for some students to get a college education the only option is to get a scholarship from the sports they play. "For some athletes, scholarships are the only reason they are able to attend college. Scholarships can be determined by your performance in athletic competition and in the classroom" (Mitalk). Even if a student receives a scholarship and do well in their sport they still have to perform well in school or their scholarship can be revoked. For the students who are relying on a sports scholarship they will push themselves to their physical breaking point to get that scholarship. This is not good for the student in any aspect of their lives because they are not going to get the scholarship if they injure themselves during their excessive
