By 1863 , The civil War had been produced hundreds of thousands of dead and wounded brave, heroic soldiers. As the terrifying fight went on for a while, there seemed to be no end in sight of a man's eye. But decisive battles at Gettysburg and Vicksburg would change the war’s course and enable to the great and wonderful Union to Win a war that everyone was frightened of “The Civil War, The greatest war they been in. Lincoln and his Generals turn the tide of the war.

After the union victory at the 1862 battle of antietam, the war again began to go terrible for the North. As before, The problem was poor leadership. When McClellan failed to pursue Lee’s beaten army, Lincoln replaced him with General Ambrose Burnside.

But the victory was a costly one for the South. During the battle, Stonewall jackson was shot and wounded. A few days later, Jackson died.These confederate victories made Lee bolder. He was convinced that a major victory on Union soil would force northerners to end the war. In june 1863 Lee’s troops crossed Maryland and marched into Pennsylvania. More troops joined the fight on both sides. By evening , the southerners had pushed the Union forces back through Gettysburg. The next day more than 85,000 Union soldiers faced some 75,000 brave other soldiers. On the afternoon of july 3rd (Prentice Hall American History page 533 and 534). They tried to reach the Union line and only a few reached it but they were drove back real fast. During one day of battle they had a lot of men dead. Lee lost a loto of his troops maybe about a third of their troops. On july 4th lee’s weak army began its retreat. They were unable to take over a city so grant had begun a attack on a city. They later went on to stay in the mountains and other places and at mules and rats. After weeks 30,000 soldiers at vicksburg finally gave up. Later a lot of people gathered up to honor the lives that they lost. Grant later decides that they were going to attack richmond even if they
