They describe the Great Barrier Reef as the 8th Wonder of the World, our very own Eiffel Tower, but more impressive of course. With that in mind, how is it possible that our government has allowed 93% of the reef to be affected by catastrophic coral bleaching? Our tourism industry is consistently reaching new and phenomenal peaks, but without our stunning coastal attractions, the numbers will surely dwindle. The cost will be substantial however the benefits, incredible. For many years now global warming has been becoming an increasingly larger issue. The Australian Labour Party (ALP), led by Bill Shorten has just announced that $500 million will be put aside for the conservation of the Reef. (As bleaching worsens, ALP puts $500 million towards reef) However, this is simply not enough. Research states that $10 billion will be needed to restore the reef to all its glory. Unfortunately, this is no easy feat without publicity, fundraising and our very own helping hands. This restoration will not only create jobs for hundreds of people but also attract more tourists. Matt Beiker even went as far as to say that ‘Tourism can be the next mining boom' and for Queensland, as well as the rest of the country these benefits would be extraordinary. However, this cannot be achieved with the current stagnant
