Fighting has been a part of the National Hockey League (NHL) since 1922. It has had a huge impact on the game of hockey and the sport would not be the same without it. There are a lot of injuries involved with fighting but if fighting was not in pro hockey then there would be a lot more injuries. Some players would be more likely to run at people and get away with it without facing the consequences for it. Fighting also has a key part in motivating a team if that team is not playing well.

A fight will spark a team and give them a little more energy in a game most of the time. It is also entertaining for the fans. Skilled players that rarely fight even agree that fighting should not be taken out of hockey. Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings, Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks and Rick Nash of the New York Rangers. Rick Nash said to an ESPN reporter,“ I think it’s a part of the game. I think it’s always been that way. I think it keeps a lot of guys honest on the ice. If they are going to do certain things on the ice to skill players, they’ve got to answer the bell to different tough guys. If fighting ever got banned, it would mean that some star players who are known for scoring and being a key player for their team would become less of an impact player. If fighting was eliminated, good teams would falter and lose games. Fighting keeps the game clean by not allowing dirty players, also known as pests, to take cheap shots at opposing players without facing consequences. If a team is not playing to its potential, a fight could spark the team and motivate them to play harder. This would result in the team winning more games and scoring more
