Minimum Wage Change Without minimum wage, some people would have to work for any rate the employer chooses, this could be as low as $0.01 an hour. Minimum wage is a very controversial topic with many good arguments for both sides. Minimum wage was created to help americans regain control of the economy (United States Department of Labor). It was added to Federal Law in 1938, after a giant economical crash: the Great Depression. Minimum wage should be increased, but not forever. If it were completely up to me, I would want to increase minimum wage, until I am 18 and required to pay taxes. But in the meanwhile, since I shall be getting a job soon, it would be great if minimum wage was higher: so in the future, I make more money. In Eugene, Oregon, and at the moment, minimum wage is at $9.75 per hour. That rate is relatively high compared to other states, and we have no sales tax. It could be something like raising taxes, which could even put families on the verge of poverty directly into poverty. If that is the case, the amount of people living in poverty would not change too much. Another way in which raising minimum wage would reflect on everyone is that the prices of things could just increase as well, or the number of labor jobs would decrease and try to be replaced by machines. If minimum wage increased too much, it could quite possible be cheaper to have machines working; rather than people.
