The librarian would not want a book about how to be a terrorist in the school library. Restricting school libraries from carrying certain books is not a violation of free speech. Freedom of Speech is the right, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, to express beliefs and ideas without any government restriction. Banning books from school libraries does not mean you can’t write or publish certain book, it means that the school doesn’t want that particular book in the school library. However, Government and schools have the authority to put limits on speech relate to pornography, immorality, incitement, fighting words etc. Certain book provides encouragement of damaging lifestyles. There are books out there that portray sexual scene, inappropriate dialogue, and violate racial theme and ethic. People who disagree would say that banning books violates the First amendment, and it’s anti-education. You still can read those books, but outside of the school. Especially when a library has kids entering it all the time, there should be restrictions on what they give out. Many books with content that include sexual situations or dialogues should be restricted in the library. Anne Frank: The Diary Of A Girl was banned because it’s very graphic and pretty pornographic for the students to read. 1984 by George Orwell, one the top ten banned books, has been banned from schools supposedly because of the sex and the intensity of the horror. It’s inappropriate for a school to be giving such materials out to the kids when it’s really the parents’ job to give the students this information. Fictional books such as “Of Mice And Men”, should be entertaining for students, but this book is banned in some state due to seductive language and violence.
