It’s the early 1950’s, a time where homosexuality was not tolerated or accepted in anyway. Those that were homosexual were not open about it because of they knew what would happen and those that were open about their sexuality put their life at risk every day. Hate crimes were committed by citizens and even the police force because there were no laws against it. Meaning that the lynching and murdering of gays and lesbians in public was not only allowed, but it was common. Doctors compared being homosexual to having a deviant disorder or suffering from a mental illness. Fast forward to 2015 where the Supreme Court has ruled that same-sex couples are allowed to marry in every state in the US and organizations have been made to advocate and protect them. Hate crimes are illegal and if one commits a hate crime they can face jail time and now it’s common to see same sex couples in public.
