When you arrive at the the spot you are going to hunt the first thing you should do is grab a flashlight and walk the area, this is something I have found very helpful and it often times can allow you to point out soft spots in the ice before someone falls through. Next it is time to set out decoys. If you have found soft spots during your walk, or if there is an area where the river is not iced over this is where the floating decoys should go.
