About 2 million people around the world drink alcohol. Out of those 2 million, about 8.7 million drinkers are underage. And drinking underage is a serious health problem today. Drinking alcohol underage or legally does not protect people from the harmful side effects. About 76 million people are currently affected with alcohol use disorder, such as alcohol dependence and abuse. There is an ongoing debate about lowering the drinking age law of 21 years old to 18 years old. Lowering the age of drinking is a very bad idea and has many dangerous consequences to young drinkers. The human brain fully develops at age 25. If anything bad happens to the brain when it hasn't matured yet, one might make some very bad decisions. Drinking alcohol at age 18, 7 years before the brain matures, will have many bad effects. If you drink heavily at a young age, the frontal lobe of the brain will begin to shrink, which causes impaired judgement. Scientists did a test and it showed that in places where the drinking age is higher, there are barely any accidents. So, the higher the legal drinking age, the less deaths and accidents in drinking and driving. Statistics say that every day, at least 30 people die from drinking and driving. Lowering the drinking age will make that worse. Not lowering the drinking age will also prevent underage binge drinking. binge drinking between 21-25 year olds, about 45.9 percent of them binge drink, which is not good for their health. If people aged 20 or younger start binge drinking, they will suffer greater consequences because their body is still
