School Dress Code
“We feel very strongly that uniforms would be a bad direction. High school is about teaching these young adults to be responsible individuals. Putting further restrictions on choice and self-expression is counterproductive to this process.”("Opinions on School Uniforms - For and Against - John Adams High School Parent Group") I believe that students should not have to wear uniforms, instead they just have a modest dress code. If students have to wear a uniform that is violating their first amendment. Students should be able to express themselves with what they wear. Also, just because the student is wearing a uniform does not mean that performance in any way is going to necessarily increase. School uniforms do not solve all problems schools deal with. Student wearing uniforms face just as many problems and issues if students were to have a dress code. I do think that students should wear uniforms. I think that students should be able to express their opinion at schools with what they wear, which they would not be able to do if we had uniforms. “The first reason for opposition is that uniforms are believed to restrict student, parent, and family rights for freedom of expression in dress.” (Mitchell and Knechtle 487-494) The case Tinker Vs. Des Moines shows that the school's dress code can violate the student's rights. In Tinker Vs Des Moines the students wore black armbands to protest America's involvement in the Vietnam War.
