Horrified exclamations. Shrieks of outrage. Glares of contempt. And it's all because you have the audacity to mention the outrageous notion that perhaps January 26th should not be the date to celebrate Australia Day.

Quite frankly, this reaction is unwarranted. Australia Day is supposed to be about celebrating everything great about our nation and its people; however, the very thing that undermines its importance is indeed the date on which it falls.

Currently, Australia Day condones the horrific treatment of the Aboriginals, which is completely insensitive. Also, our nation is continually divided on a day we are meant to celebrate our unity. The High Court abolished "Immigration Restriction Act" and the "White Australia Policy" on this day in 1973. Without the occurrence of this event, Australia wouldn't be the diverse and welcoming country that we are today. Doesn't it, then, make sense to celebrate Australia Day on a day such as this?

These are just three possible options – and surely, there are countless more. Clearly, these dates are all better alternatives than January 26th.

I'm sure you now agree that it makes no sense whatsoever to keep our current date due to the Aboriginals' negative connotation of the date, as well as it causing division on a day we are meant to embrace in our unity. In addition, other dates would give Australia Day more emotional significance.

Several ways in which you can join the movement to make a difference is discussing with your local council to move Australia Day celebrations to a different day, signing petitions or even attending rallies.

Don't be one of those people who abhor the idea of doing something for the good of our people – instead, be a good mate and accept that it's time to fight for what is right. Fight for the Aboriginals, past, present and future. Fight for the entire nation. Fight for what it means to be Australian. Because then will we have that much more to
