With out power and politics much of what goes on in an organization could never be accomplished. However power can be abused and over shadow organizational goals. As managers of the firm we have to analyze how power and politics impact general motors ability to achieve their firm’s goals. How can analyzing and finding solutions rectify the problem and improve General Motors future performance? With a tight lock and dominance on the auto industry, General motors seemed untouchable for most of the 20th century. This false security and dangerous confidence of power management had in the corporation has negatively impacted the organization. General Motors corporate structure was decentralized and only worked well as long as General Motors operated as a monopoly and dominated the industry. General motors had an old way of thinking while the rest of the world was changing. General motors executives were not keeping up with market changes. Management felt they would always be on top and isolated them self from they way the rest of the world was manufacturing cars. This segregation slowed the company’s ability to adapt to a changing market or even recognize the market was changing. They were producing gas guzzlers while gas prices created a demand for smaller and more efficient vehicles. When smaller cars were finally introduced they were not good quality. GM Marketers could not restore the brands luster. They produced huge cars and created slogans that did not make any sense.
