Pet Smart was originally called PetFood Warehouse and began in 1986. Jim and Janice Dougherty are the founders of Pet Smart. They opened their first two store in Arizona in 1987. In 1988 their stores, all seven, began working with local animal welfare groups to hold fundraising as well as pet adoption events. In 1989, Jim and Janice change the store name from PetFood Warehouse to PETsMart. In 1993, PETsMart goes public on the stock market. The following year the 100th PETsMART store opened and began providing in-store pet training. The same year PETsMART Charities, Inc. makes a independent, nonprofit organization and partner with PETsMART stores to help save the lives of homeless pets. In 1996, PETsMART grows out of the United Sates and opens eight stores in Canada. The following year the 500th store of PETsMART opens. In 2000, PETsMart releases their vision statement, “To provide Total Lifetime Care SM for every pet, every parent, every time—which we do by offering superior products, unmatched services and superb customer service to pet parents and their pets.” In 2002, PETsHOTEL was beginning tested in Phoenix stores.
