Pete’s relationship with Sucker went downhill after one eventful, and terrible night. Moments between them are tense and dreadful, but being alone together is even less favorable. Sucker hates Pete now, and does not want to spend a second with him, and it is even “worse” when they are “alone together in the room”. This room was once very special to the both of them. Therefore, their room was the both of theirs. However, now Sucker has taken over the room, but at this point in time, neither of them really care about whose room it really is. In fact, now Pete and Sucker even despise being in the room if it means having to be alone with each other. This means for the relationship that they, unless Pete can catch Sucker when he goes back to the way he used to be and sincerely apologizes, aren’t going to be as close as brothers for a long time-maybe even never again. This “hard, sneering look” is how Sucker shows Pete his anger and hatred for him. To Pete, it is just another way reason to be afraid of Sucker now that he is part of a gang, and much bigger than Pete. And as for Sucker, he is just be trying to get Pete’s attention, and trying to let him know how mad he is. Throughout the whole story, Sucker shows his emotions with his face. However, Pete is only made uncomfortable by these “hard” and “sneering” looks. He is still unable to see beyond Sucker’s eyes, and because of his blindness to Sucker’s emotions, cannot break the barrier that is keeping them apart.
