Gender stereotypes have long been an argumentative subject throughout the sporting world. Most sports require participants to be determined, courageous, confident, fit and masculine. These qualities are all linked to male gender stereotypes. These stereotypes have progressed over hundreds of years but to say how these interpretations have developed is uncertain. Males have been expected to display these characteristics to be truly ‘masculine’ while on the other hand, female gender stereotypes assume women to be soft, passive and cherishing; these are not qualities ideally suited to sport.
