The controversy of legalising marijuana has been going on for a long time. It’s either you’re Pro or Con marijuana and or you just don’t care. The main purpose of this article is on why Peter Lewis believes that “Our marijuana laws are outdated, ineffective and stupid”. Peter Lewis was a Chairman of the Progressive insurance company. Lewis’s goal is to “reduce the penalties for growing, using, and selling marijuana”. Many people are being arrested and incarcerated every year for the possession of marijuana because the government consider it a Schedule 1 drug. Marijuana has been around for centuries, dated and documented back to 6,000 years ago and possible twice as long, and it only became officially illegal in the early 1900s. Marijuana has well been recognized as one of the early crops recorded. The government should just legalize and regulate marijuana so people who want to do it, can do in peace and whoever doesn’t can keep on walking. …show more content…
Many people strongly believe marijuana should be legalized nationally and that people should be stopped being persecuted for it. Lewis believed that “change in this area is inevitable, much like the movement towards equal rights for gays and lesbians”. I honestly agree with Lewis when he says that “the government has a marijuana problem-it doesn't realize the benefits or the harm caused policing it”. By legalizing it, it could even be of benefit to many states to bring in tax revenues. If it becomes legalized much more money will go into research so it could be more beneficial in the medical aspect as well because we can’t only look at recreational use, “more than half of Americans have used marijuana themselves” and Lewis openly said that he indeed is “...one of those American, and I know firsthand that marijuana can be helpful and that it certainly isn’t cause for locking anyone
