Philbrook Essay
Art is something you can find all over the world. A person can find art anywhere, even in a museum that was once a house. On Friday, April 7th, the art appreciation class went to the Philbrook Museum in Tulsa. We went to the museum to expand our horizons on art and see the work up close. This was my first time at the Philbrook and I am glad I got the opportunity to go and learn more about art. My first impression when I arrived was that the building was big and it was very beautiful.
Something I never knew about the Philbrook is that is used to be a house. Waite Phillips was the owner of the house; he and his family lived in it for 11 years. The house was built in 1927 with 72 rooms on 27 acres. My favorite part of the Philbrook was the formal gardens. The tempietto stuck out to me because I found it interesting that it reflected into the pond. The lobby, which is the rotunda had the columns all around it and had a dome shape. My favorite was the painting by Thomas Moran called “An Angry Sea”. Moran was an American artist and this painting is an oil on canvas painted in 1887. It was my favorite because the contrast between the light and dark colors in the sky and water. Also, where the light colors are it creates a focal point. I also liked the “Spots Suitcase” by Marilyn Levine that was created in 1981 by using ceramic. The details on the suitcase are what stuck out to me the most. The installation in the rotunda that was made of colored yarn was one of my favorite pieces and Hottea was the artist. The colors went from warm to cool and that created unity throughout it. After going through the Philbrook, I related to the quotes by Thomas Arthur Manhart that said “learning something new every day is what life is really all about”. This quote was on a bench in the tempietto and I related to it because I learned so many new things in the
