In this paper I will argue that Ayn Rand would have supported Wal-Mart’s attorneys during the sex-bias controversy. Rand argued for rational egoism as the guiding moral principle. Ayn Rand would agree with Wal-Mart’s attorneys because she believes that people want to pursue their own happiness. She argued that there should be no interference of the government in a work environment. Though Ayn Rand would oppose the claims made by former workers and current workers I believe she would still try to empower the groups of workers because she would not agree on an ethical standpoint. The first reason Ayn Rand would support Wal-Mart is because of her idea that humans only want to pursue their own best interests. Ayn Rand believed in rational egoism. This idea shows how Ayn Rand supports Wal-Mart because the corporation was fighting to have individuals make claims and sue instead of joining a big group represented by one lawyer. The women are not serving their own best interests in a group because they have to agree with everyone else making the claim. This idea that we pursue our own interests supports the theory of ethical egoism. After the Supreme Court rejected the first case another was filed requesting more time to file discrimination claims with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or other lawsuits with certain companies. The second idea that Ayn Rand believes is that there should never be an interference of the government in a business setting.
