The story of a man named Phineas Gage, will forever be one of the rarest and most famous cases in the history of neuroscience. Gage was born on July 9, 1823 in New Hampshire. His story starts on September 13, 1848 while working on a railroad track in Vermont. Gage was preparing for an explosion by filling holes drilled into rocks with dynamite to clear a path. The tool he was using to fill the hole with explosives was called a tamping iron. While doing this, a spark from the iron reacted with the explosive powder and caused an explosion. During the explosion, the tamping iron penetrated his cheek which was then sent through his brain and exited through his skull. The iron was over three feet long and weight a little over 13 pounds.
