Physician-Assisted-Suicide (The Right to Die with Dignity)

Logically, if we have the right to be happy, live a good life, have good education, have a well-paid job, and if we have the right to control our own lifestyle and living situation, then what will be wrong to have the right to die if the current standard of our lifestyle and living situation get worst? If the standard guarantees death? The story article I have chosen to discuss is about Brittany Maynard, a woman who deliberately moved to Oregon to die with Dignity. Her story drew the public attention both nationally and internationally. She produces videos posted on youtube describing her situation and intention. However, in contrary to her intention and wish, she was publicly asked by the majority of people to reconsider her intention, as the human instinct is to survive and not to die (Slotnik, 2014). One of her response to the public opinion was, “There is not a cell in my body that is suicidal or that wants to die,” she told PEOPLE. “I want to live. I wish there was a cure for my disease, but there’s not.” And finally, she did it. She took the medication prescribed to her by her Physician and passed away.

Her decision to die was condemned by the Vatican, the Catholic Churches, and most religious sector. According to (Corriston, 2014), a Vatican office openly condemns her decision after she has passed away. He told the ANSA—an Italian News Agency—that committing suicide is wrong and not acceptable. He said the worst thing an individual can do is to commit suicide.It is like saying no to every good thing this world has to offer. He labeled her action

This is because I believe “hope dies last”. However, after learning Brittany story, my mind is divided. I was emotionally disorganized. I agree with her decision and her right to end up her life if her lifestyle and condition shifted to the worst. Her decision was wise but not necessarily the best. I believe she lost hope.
