Ultimately, the main objective of this wonderfully constructed and heartfelt movie was to explore the question of what happens when someone's disability is so devastating that death seems to be more fulfilling than living but are unable to fulfill their desire without the help of others. Ramon Sampedro, a ship mechanic in his earlier days became a quadriplegic due to a serious diving accident and was confined to his bed for roughly 30 years. He fought tirelessly and in the end, unsuccessfully for years in the Spanish courts to be given the “green light to take his own life and to end, what he considered, to be years of suffering. The end result was him becoming a public figure in the campaign to legalize assisted suicide.
