I have performed many dissections in the past including a rat, a frog, worms, and a fetal pig (in fifth grade!). However, because I have not done a dissection in a long time, I won’t be familiar with the tools. There will probably be a learning curve.
We haven’t studied anatomy much this year (although I did study all of the organ systems a lot in preparation for the AP test) so I think this dissection will be very helpful in understanding pig, mammalian, and human anatomy. Furthermore, one student said that, “Truly, the dissection is a better teaching tool-- the only one which really teaches everything."
I have had difficulty performing labs in the class, mainly due to procedural error. I do think I’ve gotten better over the course of the year, but I might be even better at this dissection lab because it is very student-driven in nature. I know that my lab partner is not particularly excited to perform the actual dissection, so I think taking a leading role will be a challenge that I can aspire to. One student said, “Using pigs allows the student to gain responsibility and a feeling of control when dissecting the pig themselves, rather than viewing a pre-dissected pig.” While we will have a guidebook that will help us, there are no pre-developed …show more content…
However, because I have done many dissections in the past, I don’t think I’ll become queasy from the smell, the sight of the organs, or the actual act of dissection. I have actually really enjoyed dissections other hands on experiences in the past, so I think this one will be similar. As one student said in the article, "It is very educational and motivational for the students. In our dissection, we did our own cutting and touching, that is the main part in dissection and it's [sic] fun. It is important that you can actually feel a pig's stomach or feel the
