In the novel “Lord of the Flies” written by William Golding. The protagonist Piggy is an important character who represents civilisation on the deserted island, he has an effect of many of the significant events that occur. Throughout the novel, he is described to the reader as a fat boy with asthma; nobody genuinely understands how much his character adds to the immature group. Throughout the novel Piggy reveals, he is self conscious intelligent, and civilised.
Throughout the novel, Golding shows Piggy’s insecurity when he tells Ralph his nick name- and the way he reacts when he is called it. A quote out of the book that proves this is when Piggy said “I don’t care what they call me, so long as they don’t call me what they used to call me at school… Piggy please don’t tell the others.” This quote shows Piggy’s insecurity; he was obviously bullied for this nickname before, and wants a fresh start. The negative connotation of the nickname Piggy is that that he is fat and greedy, he does not want to be seen as this. Golding makes it obvious to the reader his lack of confidence results in him not wanting to be a target and do anything that will make himself stand out. His abilities resulted in all the lost children finding each other. An example of this is when he said “we can use this to call the others, have a meeting, they will come when they hear us.” The depth is he must have thought to think of this is incredible for a 12-year-old. It was obvious to him everybody would assemble where the loud noise is coming from, due to the fact they are used to gathering to the sound of bells. Piggy is mature for his age by showing how eager he is to be rescued.
