In his 17th year as ruler Mansa Musa took a pilgrimage to Mecca. This pilgrimage became legendary due to the extreme wealth that he displayed. On his was to Cairo, Mansa Musa was accompanied by a massive caravan consisting of 60,000 men including a personal escort of 12,000 slaves, all dressed in brocade and Persian silk. The generosity of Mansa Musa while on his pilgrimage upset the economy of the cities he visited, because it changed the value of gold. Super inflation was caused by the decline in gold’s value. He made large donations to charities and to the poor while passing through cities and regions he visited.
