The United States of America was created as a result of the severe religious oppression that the Pilgrims faced in England. The Pilgrims, “[fleed] religious persecution, broke away from the Church of England…The Church was under strict rule of the State so their actions were considered treasonous and these Separatists had to flee their homeland” (“Pilgrims”). Because of the prior hardships that the Pilgrims dealt with, The United States of America was founded on the principle of religious freedom amongst other rights. That is where the lyrics of America’s National Anthem, “…the land of the free and the home of the brave,” originate from (Key, 1814). The suffragists tried everything in their power to persuade their peers that allowing women the right to vote was the just thing to do.
