Pink: Rock Music and Pink Floyd Essay

Pink Floyd’s album The Wall influenced a great change in the music industries from the 1980s to today within America. The album released on Nov. 30, 1979, the live concert preformed in 1980 through 1981, and the movie released in 1982 gave the foundation to the 1980’s American music scene to the present music scene. The album The Wall brought back a vibe of psychedelics from the 1960s but gave a twist of hard rock from transitioning electronics to guitars. The concert for The Wall was the first live show to adopt media effects, such as lighting, and props as a main part of a live performance which changed all rock stars’ performances forever. The concert helped to create the most popular genre of the 1980s, glam metal. Pink Floyd literally pushed the edge of what concerts were before with their spectacular visuals. Pink Floyd’s The Wall was a pioneer in producing promotional films for albums or songs with the movie. Making a movie for a album was a new idea of using media to sell one’s music and influenced a great change in what was important visual or lyrics. The album The Wall by Pink Floyd literally helped to create the 1980’s of America which in turn leads to creating today’s music industry of America.
Generally in the Untied States a average teenager growing up in the mid 70’s through the 80’s was shown a span of different genres and cultural changes. Many teenagers were becoming in need of something new for the 1970s was a time of many experimental genres. When interviewing a man who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, Pink Floyd was a very recognized band. When asked what his thoughts were on the album The Wall he explained how it was a new version of music that amazed him and all his friends. He states “This so called rock opera was nothing like a opera but a album with a fantastic blend of music and lyrics.” Next he was asked to explain his feeling on his experience of the concert base off The Wall. He explained it was a concert he would never forget though he saw it on tape. From the concerts he had been to this concert broke all barriers. He remembers the blow up props, fake musician, and the iconic building of the wall along with the lighting effects all causing a shock effect. Pink Floyd was seen as a faceless band but with this concert their faces became what the visual effects shown. After that memorable performance he hoped for every other show to give the performance that was given. It gave the main definition of what a concert should be and were in the 80s he said (Centore,2011).
After a while of interviewing he was asked to explain feelings over turning that rock opera into a movie. He declared “The movie was a brilliant way to bring the lyrics to life. It came out in theaters and aired on MTV shortly after. The concert did express a lot of what the lyrics said but the movie was a genius idea to give The Wall’s and Pink Floyd’s full effect. The movie was something new and another interesting method that cause teenagers wanting to see other bands create movies and videos to go along with their favorite songs. ” He remembers looking at this creation of The Wall as the start of the creation in glam metal of the 1980s. The average teenager in the late 1970s went through the time where there was a great change in Americans’ music and media industries. His last statement was that Pink Floyd had been around in the early 1960s but the album The Wall showed a whole new experience that was seen to have a key impact on the Untied States music industry (Centore,2011).
First, with this released album, Pink Floyd set a new standard of music for the 1980s. Music of the 1980s still continues to influence the music of today (Dance, 2001). That statement stands true because the 1980’s music industry brought heavy metal along with artist like Michel Jackson to become famous which artist of today are inspired by.
