Invictus is a movie based on John Carlin’s book, Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation. The true events around the 1995 Rugby World Cup in post-apartheid South Africa are the basis of the story. On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from the Robben Island prison after 27 years in jail. On April 27 1994 Mandela was democratically elected the first black President of South Africa. His presidency faced huge challenges. In the movie Mandela worries about racial divisions between black and white South Africans. While attending a game of the Springboks, the country's rugby team, Mandela sees that the blacks in the stadium cheer against their home team, because the all-white team represents prejudice and apartheid
