My current position is a playroom therapy volunteer on the Pediatric unit, but I have held various positions discharging patients and working with patients in the Antepartum unit, all which I have thoroughly enjoyed. My experience as a playroom therapy volunteer has given me one-on-one interaction with patients and medical staff on the unit. It has also allowed me to observe two of my favorite interests, physical and mental well-being. Having the opportunity to observe how a physically declined child is able to mentally adapt and function in not only a different setting (hospital setting), but also what can be a traumatic or stressful environment for children. As a volunteer, I am obviously unable to help improve the physical health condition of a patient, but my role does allow me to help a patient mentally. I am able to interact with children and make them feel comfortable during their hospital visit by playing games, doing arts & crafts, taking them to the playroom, or by simply talking to them in hopes of serving as a stress reliever for whatever they are going through personally. Through this sort of interaction, I am able to observe a certain part of healthcare, which is how the mental well-being can affect the physical well-being and vice versa. Through my research assistant position, I have been able to interact with various populations including, but not limited to: children/adolescents with mental illness, veterans with PTSD, healthy controls, low SES, etc. Being able to closely work with these populations has made me consciously aware of the health needs and issues that they face, which has continued to fuel my interest in working in the public health field. This upcoming semester I am starting my own research project where I will be looking at whether restrained or non-restrained eaters have a higher cognitive performance. My experience in research has contributed to my interest in public health because I am currently looking for answers to some public health issues regarding diet and cognitive performance and am eager to utilize the resources of this program to further delve into other public health issues regarding
