The ruling in Plessy V. Ferguson resulted in many states segregating through the train cars, segregation laws, and the Jim Crow laws. To begin, segregation is when people separate from others based on their color. Usually, it is blacks being separated from whites. The black section is generally in terrible condition compared to the white section. An example is Document 2 called “Political …show more content…
Ferguson was the increase of disenfranchisement which denied blacks the right to vote through voting intimidation, the grandfather clause, and literacy tests. To start off, disenfranchisement is removing someone's right to vote. An example of this is in Document 8, "Photographs From the Jim Crow South, Part 2” which shows a photo of a white holding up a confederate flag in front of where blacks are supposed to vote. This is called voting intimidation, this is unfair because the person holding the Confederate flag is trying to scare blacks into voting for a specific person. Because of this, blacks could be scared to vote or they could not truly express their opinion in the election. This is a great example of disenfranchisement. To continue, another example of this bad deed is in Document 10, “Disenfranchisement” it states, “Because most Black Americans’ ancestors were slaves, they rarely qualified for an exemption,” The grandfather clause is where you can get exempted from the near impossible literacy test if your grandfather was able to vote. But the evidence states that most blacks’ grandfathers were slaves, which means they could not vote. This would mean that almost no blacks were able to vote at all. This is super unjust because it is a loophole that not all blacks discover. This is really unfair because it basically means that even though the state says that blacks need a chance to vote, North Carolina still found a loophole and they still managed to not let blacks vote without the U.S. knowing. Finally, you may think that there are only examples of disenfranchisement, but there is actually a lot more than you think. One more example is in Documents 10 and 11, “Harper’s Weekly Political Cartoon,” these documents both show the Literacy Test, a test that is nearly impossible to take. Here is one of the questions, “Draw a figure that is square in shape”. Divide it in half by drawing a straight line from its northeast corner to
