PT & OT: Patient has no significant PMH prior to falling. Patient reports short-term and long term memory issues along with acute changes in visual fields, visual spatial awareness, and visual perception since she fell. Mother also reports changes to Emma’s sleep and eating habits since the fall.
Additional PMH you need to know:
PT and OT would need to determine whether this is the patient’s first concussion and if she has sustained any previous head injuries. Determining any visual deficits prior to injury would also be imperative for both practices. The OT will collaborate with Emma working on her time-management skills in order to make adjustments to her daily habits and routines in a manner that will increase the amount of restful occupations she engages in throughout the day to improve her sleep patterns, promote healthy eating habits, and schedule more time for occupations that require the use of her non dominant hand. The OT will also use formal and informal assessment to determine Emma’s motivations outside of being a cheerleader and to identify areas of occupations in which she would like to improve. The OT will administer MOHO based assessments such as the COPM and MOHOST to gather this information. The OT will also educate Emma and her family on concussions and the ensuing symptoms in order to increase their awareness of the duration of symptoms and what may trigger some of the negative behaviors brought on by compensating. The BERs will also be administered to determine Emma’s emotional and behavioral strengths, which will allow the OT to better prepare Emma for success in a task by ensuring she is using an area of strength during intervention activities. this also will give the OT insight into other performance in which Emma could improve and design activities
