The Role of Education in “Pocho”
It is often said that knowledge is power and that with an education anything is possible. These sayings are especially true for oppressed minorities fighting for justice and equality. Having an education provides these people with a powerful weapon that can help them stand up for themselves and bring about change. In his novel, “Pocho”, Jose Alberto Villarreal, illustrates the immense power of knowledge and education through the main character, Richard Rubio. Richard is a typical Mexican-American boy who is trying to get away from the oppressing social norms of the society he lives in through the help books and education. Villarreal’s “Pocho” suggest that school, education, and books play an important part in helping Mexican- Americans in their struggle for equality and justice because education severs as a path to enlightment that can help bring about change.
