This poem seems to be about father deciding whether to kill, let die slowly, or buy an new tank for a Betta fish that he purchased for his daughter. The store he initially bought the fish at said that the half gallon cold bowl would be fine, but after he spent hours online researching he found that it would not be a good environment for the fish. He did not want to watch it suffer and die nor did he want his daughter to see the fish die. He states that they had had a hard year. The poem ends with him analyzing the fish, determining it's worth, until time for bed.
