For this piece, I am choosing to look at middle-childhood.
“I hate you!” “I wish you weren’t my mother!” “You are the meanest mother!” “Susie’s mother is not as mean as you.” I have heard these or similar statements from one or both of my children when they were younger.
This poem establishes how a child views boundaries set by the mother. Children whine and complain when their viewpoint is challenged. Making obedience difficult. When my children were young, my lack of ability setting clear boundaries and consequences was revealed. My mother told me, “If you do not get a handle on their behavior soon, they will rule you as teens.” This gave me the aspiration to make the necessary changes to become the “Meanest Mother.”
