Speaking out to others and facing your limitations shows the bravery and courage many characters in this unit have shown. I interpret the theme, Voices of Experience, as struggles or challenges that people have gone through, but chose to share through their voice in writing. Many of the authors used literary devices to incorporate the theme into these stories such as the use of many diverse characters. In addition, many characters share the traits of anger and hurt through their first hand situations. Furthermore, through the character’s hurt or anger, the author is able to show a struggle that the character may have gone through, and convert it into a life lesson that can teach others something valuable. For example, one important reason is found in stanzas ten and eleven that say, “For the first time/ I dare to come out of my depth”(553). Before this stanza, the narrator mentions of the sharks have appeared on the last day, and the sea becomes full of evil and misfortune. Knowing that the sharks could attack at any moment, the narrator continues to dive inside the water and go for a swim. This shows that although we fear many things in life, we can't let that control us or stop us from living our daily lives. This is important because through the narrator's use of words of comparing fear to that of a shark, a younger crowd may be able to learn many things from this. The narrator is able to inspire and inform others to deal with similar situations when we cross our boundaries. Another example is found in the fifth, sixth, and seventh stanzas that say, “I tell you, they break 6 feet of water. / Isn’t it the same sea, and won’t we/ play in it anymore?” (553). This shows that although the sharks were very close to the swimmer and post a great danger, he/she continue to go inside the evil water. This is important because, as mentioned earlier, although there are many limitations stopping us in our lives, we should continue to try and overcome them the best way possible, by confronting them. Once again, this connects to the unit’s theme because of the author's advice to people by sharing this story with the many readers. As a result, this connects to the heme because of the point the author wanted to get across to the reader about how to face our limits, through their own experience and
