Through all countries' histories, there comes a point where they hit a low, weather it be a war with another country, a war within the country or an all time low in an economic depression. Cambodia hit an all time low when Pol Pot came into power, and took advantage of the weak nation after the country was fresh out of war. The people were ready for change and Pol Pot was able to promise a change in the country. He wanted Cambodia to be a self-sufficient country, so they could be independent from other countries. In trying to create the self-sufficient country that he envisioned, he destroyed parts of the country and many lives were lost. Pol Pot and the Democratic Kampuchea created a situation where they said that they were in favor of the poor, but just ended up taking lives and families apart in what is called the Khmar Rouge. He had wanted to triple the rice production of what the country was currently producing. This was achieved by extensive irrigation, double and triple cropping and much longer work hours than what the people had been used to. He had begun to use the people that believed in him to try and achieve this goal. In the beginning the people that he had moved out of their cities were the people that were used for the bulk of the needs for the rice fields. The people that he gave this “job” to were people who had rarely done manual labor in the past, so it was already hard for them to achieve what he had requested. As if the people not being used to manual labor wasn’t enough, they had been neglected, mistreated the sick and didn’t give the people enough food to live off of. This is the way that many of the people during this time were killed. Not because they were an enemy, but because they were treated so poorly, it killed
