As social media becomes more prevalent, everyone's opinion becomes shared. This leads to “teams” forming and making the extreme opinions heard. Political polarization is becoming more and more intense as time goes on. This is because we can more widely access information to feed into our views and opinions. The article Americans’ Feelings about Politics, Polarization and the Tone of Political Discourse from the Pew Research Center shares how Americans feel about U.S. politics. In a survey of U.S. adults conducted July 10-16, about 8 in 10 Americans responded with a negative word or phrase. …show more content…
This report concludes that political polarization is increasing drastically. From the textbook American Government: Stories of a Nation written by Scott. F. Abernathy and Karen Waples, pages 456, 464, and 511 go into depth on polarization. Page 456 states “Americans have become less attached to political parties in recent years, At the same time, the country has grown increasingly more polarized by political ideology. More conservatives hold strongly conservative views than in the past, and more liberals hold strongly liberal views.” It continues by saying that the parties are going in a sort of “combat”. Page 464 describes how political parties change and adapt. “The Democratic and Republican parties are trying to stay relevant in an age of intense polarization. That polarization has grown and has led some voters to participate in politics not just because they support their party but out of intense dislike of the other side.” Page 511 describes how the media has changed and therefore altered politics. “Some political scientists worry that ideologically driven news increases polarization and leads people to support more partisan …show more content…
