The problem with the lack of discussion is that rape has existed since before the Greeks. In the Greek myths, Zeus the father of the gods and their leader raped many of the mothers of his children. An example of rape in Greek myths includes Zeus's pursuit and rape of Io. When he pursued her, Hera, his sister, and queen found out and tried to kill her. In all of Zeus's conquests, his victims were punished. Then, non-marital rape was punished, but not very severely as other crimes. The punishment for non-marital rape was marrying the girl that was raped and not being able to divorce her. Marital rape was not punished at all due to the belief that a spouse, in most cases the husband, has a right to sex and his wife’s body; because of this, if a woman slept with someone other than her husband, it was punishable by death but if a man slept with someone other than his wife he was not punished nor was it looked down upon as much. In the Bible, rape was punished but only as a public offense. Therefore rape was more considered to be more of a crime against the household and not to the specific person.
