Epilogue

Four years later…

“Ponyboy!” I turn my head and see my older brother, Sodapop. He’s now nineteen, turning twenty soon. “You coming?” I nod my head and I go to the door where he is standing. Soda then opens the door and steps outside.
“Hey Darry, can I drive?”
“No, we want to get there safely,” Darry replies.
Same old Darry.
I get my shoes on and go outside to join my brothers.
“You alright Ponyboy?” asks Darry.
“I’m fine.”
A lie.
I can’t tell Darry how I feel. We get along better now, but things still aren’t perfect. I get into the car, sitting in the back seat while Darry and Soda sit in the front. We’re leaving now and heading towards a place that brings back painful memories. I look out at the scenery outside the car. Not much

He’s working at the gas station still, but has plans to leave.
“I gotta get out of this town sooner or later.” He has a point; we all can’t live in this town forever.

Darry, my oldest brother, is now twenty-four. Sodapop and I finally convinced him to go to college. At first, he wasn’t so sure about it, but Soda and I forced him into it. So, Darry quit his job, applied for a college, and got in. Thanks to that sports scholarship he got awhile back.

Cherry Valance… She’s at college now, but we keep in contact, writing each other letters. We write about the good things in life, not all the bad things, and not all the hard things we’ve been through. Something that Cherry writes about frequently is sunsets. Something that we both enjoy.

“We’re here.” Darry’s voice breaks into my thoughts. The car stops and we all step out.
The cemetery.
A shiver ran down my spine. It doesn’t seem right. It doesn’t seem right at all.
“Hey!” I look and see Two-Bit waving at us while Steve is standing quietly, hands shoved in his jean pockets. We all make our way over to them. Two-Bit gives me a big hug. He’s just trying to make me feel happier than I actually do.
“Well, are we going to get this over with or what?” asks Steve. Soda nods his head and we all begin to walk silently.

We stopped in front of two graves. Both of them have names on
