My name is Ponyboy Curtis, I'm from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I used to live with my brother Sodapop Curtis and our friend the Greasers. Our parents died when I was in High School. We’re from the poorer side of town and that's why our enemies, the Socs, used to hate us. They thought we were trash. My friend Johnny Cade killed a Soc back in 1960 while we were getting jumped by some of them and they were trying to drown me, Johnny said he deserved it. Later that same day, we ran away. It was just me and Johnny and there were two reasons why; he killed a soc, and my brother hit me. My brother had never hit me before, I was tired of it, and he was tired of me. I regret ever running away because that's why Johnny went into the burning church. If we had never run away, he would have never fallen through the floor and burned himself. I almost blame myself for his death, but I know he decided to run the church. He left me all those words in his letter so I could reflect on the things I was doing that he thought I was doing wrong. Today, I am writing this autobiography because I want to tell the world what happened that day, but that is only part of the story. The Socs might tell you all the different points of view about our fight and why we were enemies for that long. I want to thank everybody who was there for me when I needed them the most. I want to thank Darry for raising me after our parents died. I want to thank Soda Pop who “gets drunk on just plain living.” who also raised me along with Darry. I want to thank Cherry for getting on our side even though Johnny killed her boyfriend. I want to thank Dally for always having my back in all of the arguments and fights we ever got into. I want to thank Two-Bit for always putting a smile on everybody's faces no matter what was going through our lives that
